Judging panel comment

A double bascule-type opening bridge is proposed, but innovation is achieved by treating each of the lifting sections as four slender fingers, each capable of being moved independently of the others.

This creates the potential for a wave-like or fan-like like effect as these fingers are raised and lowered. In this way, the bridge would offer a dynamic three dimensional experience, further enhanced by the proposed sculptural form of each of the fingers in response to its structural role.

The panel noted the potential for only part of the bridge to be lowered, depending on the amount of vehicular and pedestrian demand. In such circumstances, some of the fingers might remain in a vertical position, as sentinel-like markers of the entry to the inner Viaduct Harbour. This would offer further visual interest resulting from the operation of the bridge.

The panel also appreciated that the design had been based on known mechanical technology, but employed in a novel way.
