Judging panel comment
Inspired by the Piwakawaka or Fantail, the design seeks to capture the form of
the bird and in particular the spreading curvature of the bird tail as the
bridge opens and closes.
While presenting some technical challenges, the Panel was nevertheless
captivated by the drama and spectacle that the two pairs of bridge leaves would
create when moving. These dynamic effects would be further dramatized by
night-time lighting, as suggested in the design drawings.
