Judging panel comment
This highly inventive design proposal of great sculptural clarity and strength
would offer a dramatic gateway experience for both land based and water based
users.
Inspired by the curving structural elements of the heritage lifting bridge
nearby, the design proposes two huge circular rims that would roll towards each
other and apart, in order to raise and lower the two leaves of the bascule
bridge. Each rim is housed in a multi level structure with observation galleries
at several levels.
The design has been titled "Nga Mihi" and seeks to express a coming together
that evokes ideas of challenge, meeting and welcome.
