This design uses the familiar technology of a double bascule bridge, but
celebrates the bridge structure in a way that reflects contemporary
international interest in sculptural skeletal forms.
A series of curving ribs of progressively reducing height extend above the
bridge deck, to create two linear supporting spines that reach out towards the
water spaces on either side of the bridge.
These spines also separate the central carriageway from the outer pedestrian
walkways. The overall effect would be an unfolding spatial experience for those
crossing the bridge, and a dynamic avenue effect when viewed along the bridge
length.
By choosing to extend the bridge support structure above the deck, the deck
itself is able to become a slender gently arched form, adding to the graceful
appearance of the bridge in the closed position.
