Judging panel comment
The design proposes a striking three dimensional shape, based on the traditional
hinaki or eel trap, created by means of a woven lattice of structural ribbons on
an ovoid frame.
The panel was attracted by the powerful simplicity of this idea. This simple
form pivots on a central support, bridging the water in the closed position
while appearing to float serenely in midstream when in the open position.
The design belongs to the tradition of semi enclosed bridges, but also achieves
an iconic form with local significance. Bridge users are offered a dynamic
experience within its partially enclosed space, enhanced by the decision to peel
the pedestrian routes away from the central roadway, and allow them to follow
the gentle curvature of the bridge form, with water glimpses between.
The panel also commended the potential for this design to become a very
efficient structure, with its tube like form dramatically cantilevered from its
central support. Night lighting effects would add to the dramatic impact of the
bridge.
