Judging panel comment
This design is distinctive in treating the bridge as a folded piece of
landscape, merging with the proposed landscape treatments of both the Te Wero
Island approach and the western approach to the bridge.
The result is a structure with a deliberately non-bridge like form and
appearance. The articulated blade-like shapes of the two bridge arms seek to
evoke the arching form of flax leaves, but on a monumental scale.
The panel noted that a significant merit in the design approach was the
potential to create a strong continuity between the bridge and the landforms
that it connects.
