The Landing is a three-hectare triangle of land overlooking a stretch of
water at Okahu bay. This land was reclaimed from the sea off the tip of Pokanoa
Point in the 1930s, and was originally named Easthaven. Auckland City Council
purchased the site in 1996.
The Landing is the home of the Royal Akarana Yacht Club (RAYC), formed in
1895. Other residents are the Auckland Sailing Club, Auckland Coastguard, the
New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club, Orakei watersports, Waterwise, Ferg's Kayaks
and the Auckland Canoe Club.
A concept plan was developed in 2005 to upgrade the area, and the plan was
refined following public consultation.
The following work has been undertaken to enhance the area:
- an upgrade of the onshore car parking, car/trailer parking and
boat/trailer storage
- an upgraded entrance and driveway, a sealed surface area with drainage,
enhanced layout for boat ramp access and short-term car and boat trailer
parking
- better pedestrian access with a timber boardwalk and concrete walkway
- a new rigged yacht storage area and a relocated dinghy racks area
- new lighting and landscaping
- construction of a new sealed hardstand, wash down area, Novaloo toilets,
waste management facilities and filtration system.
The council is planning to improve the existing boat ramp with a concrete
overlay covering the western and eastern ends of The Landing site. The new
overlay will ensure the ramp remains useable and safe, and will also reduce the
ongoing maintenance required.
Work will start in September 2009 and is expected to be complete in January
2010. The work will be staged so that there is always a portion of the boat ramp
available for public use.
