Artworks

Artworks building. The Artworks complex has had a strong history on Waiheke since it was established by the Waiheke community in 1991. Over the years it has served as a great community asset and arts and cultural hub. The original land and buildings were purchased by Auckland City Council in 2003 and adjacent land was purchased in 2007.

A strategic plan has been developed to assist with operational and longer-term decision-making for Artworks and was adopted by the Arts Cultural and Recreation Committee at its meeting on 11 February 2009.

How the plan was developed

The strategic plan was developed through a comprehensive process that incorporated feedback received from community consultation in 2006 and 2007, together with more recent input from key stakeholders including Waiheke Community Board members and the ward councillor, the current Artworks tenants and wider community and internal stakeholders.

The plan confirms the purpose and focus for Artworks as an arts and cultural centre for Waiheke, recognising the independent organisations that provide the core arts and cultural activities at Artworks. These include:

  • Waiheke Community Art Gallery Incorporated
  • The Artworks Community Theatre Incorporated
  • Waiheke Island Community Cinema Trust
  • Waiheke Musical Museum Charitable Trust
  • Waiheke Community Library.

There are also a range of other commercial and community tenancies that broadly complement these core arts and cultural activities.

The vision is for Artworks to be:

"an arts and cultural centre that serves the local community and reflects Waiheke Island's unique identity, by providing a place for the exchange of ideas and community participation in a range of activities".

The plan sets out five strategic objectives:

  • continuing to develop Artworks as an arts and cultural centre that reflects, and is supported by the local community
  • supporting the local community by providing opportunities for their participation in arts and cultural activities
  • attracting visitors through arts and cultural activities
  • recognising and promoting Artworks as part of council's network of facilities and venues
  • maximising opportunities for integration between Artworks and the new Waiheke community library.

The plan sets out guiding principles to support Artworks' core activities and its function as an arts and cultural centre. Key principles include:

  • a flexible mix of activities with an arts and cultural focus
  • primarily community activities, but with the opportunity for commercial tenancies that support the arts and cultural focus
  • a visitor destination to see local arts.

The strategic plan establishes a management structure that will help to build Artworks as a cohesive centre and achieve some measurable outcomes. This approach involves engaging a part time coordinator for the centre to undertake joint programme development between the various activities at Artworks and marketing the centre as an integrated arts and cultural centre for Waiheke.

Next steps

The priority will be to appoint a part-time coordinator for the Artworks centre. The coordinator will assist in developing joint programmes and exploring marketing options to raise the profile of Artworks to the local community as well as visitors to the island.
