Project background
We presented three options for the future development of the Waiheke library and
service centre to the community. These were:
- building a new library in Oneroa and a new service centre in Ostend
- building a new combined library and service centre in Oneroa
- building a new combined library and service centre in Ostend.
We received nearly 250 submissions on the three options in July 2007.
The submissions showed that the community was fairly evenly
divided on the preferred location for the library. The option of moving the
library to Ostend received slightly more support, but there was also
considerable support for keeping the library in Oneroa. The feedback also showed
that the community was clear that the service centre should remain in Ostend.
Earlier consultation feedback in November 2006 had favoured Oneroa as the
location for the library.
In September 2007, the council's Community Development and Equity Committee met
to make a decision on a preferred location.
Preferred location for the library and service centre
The committee decided that a new stand-alone library be built in Oneroa and a
new service centre be built in Ostend.
The committee carefully examined the pros and cons of both locations for the
library and determined that Oneroa was ultimately the better option for the
library because it:
- has the potential for strong links with the Artworks complex
- allows for community groups, including Artworks, to use meeting spaces
that could be included in the new library
- has the support of the Waiheke Community Board
- has strong community support
- minimises disruption is by retaining the library in Oneroa.
