A Community
input group (CIG) has been formed to provide local expertise on
the project. We have held two workshops with the CIG to look at the development of
the design brief for the library.
Soon we will be advertising for expressions of interest to engage the
architect for the project. We can then get underway on concept designs for the
new library which will be situated on the site adjacent to Artworks.
The architect will also complete a masterplan for the entire Artworks site.
We're aiming for construction to start in the second half
of 2009. The library will continue to operate from the current premises until
the new library is completed.
Funding for the project is in the
2009/2010 Annual Plan. This allows time for us
to develop the best possible design and obtain the necessary consents and
approvals.
The new library will:
- meet current and future community needs
- improve customer service through increased capacity and efficiency, including
improved access to computers
- be a sustainable building and workplace environment
- provide for inclusion of a flexible meeting space for community use
- offer increased space and additional car parking.
