Vehicle crossings
A vehicle crossing is the section of driveway that crosses the footpath and
grass verge and connects the road with the boundary of a property.
The initial construction of a vehicle crossing, including the cost of
construction, is your responsibility and you are required to get a permit for
this.
On-going maintenance of vehicle crossings in Auckland city is the council's responsibility.
How to apply
A separate permit is required for the construction of each new vehicle crossing
or alteration to an existing vehicle crossing.
Customers must lodge their application for a permit by post or in person at
council offices in Graham Street, or at the
Waiheke Island Service Centre.
There is a non-refundable application fee of $240, which covers the
processing and inspection charges.
All applications must be on the correct form and include the following
information:
- a sketched plan showing the dimensions of the proposed crossing and its
location in relation to property boundaries
- if applicable, your sketched plan should also include:
- existing crossing
- trees
- poles - power, telephone, signs
- cesspits in street
- underground utility services
- other features - including intersections, pedestrian crossings or traffic signals.

A resource consent may be required should the proposed vehicle crossing infringe
any district plan rules. We recommend that you
contact us to discuss your proposal before submitting
your application.
Once the permit has been approved, it is valid for three months. Works must
be carried out within this time period or the permit will lapse and you will
need to reapply.
Construction guidelines
All workmanship must be of a high standard and comply with the following
guidelines:
Additionally all construction work must be carried out safely in accordance with
the Code of practice for working in the
road - Auckland region. A temporary
traffic management plan may be required.
Helpful tips
- the construction zone around a vehicle crossing is to be kept safe at
all times and the work completed as quickly as possible
- the footpath must remain accessible to pedestrians at all times, including
access by wheelchairs and prams. This may require ramping between the excavated
area and the existing footpath
- crossings must be constructed to match the existing footpath and channel
levels. They should also be graded to give sufficient clearance to the
underside of all vehicles
- the gradient of the vehicle crossing is not to exceed 1:4 for land zoned
residential, and 1:8 for all other land
- if the edge of the vehicle crossing is within one metre of a crack,
joint or existing edge of footpath, the existing footpath shall be replaced
as part of the reinstatement and saw cut accordingly
- any bluestone kerb blocks removed during construction are to remain the

Inspections
Inspections should be arranged after excavation, boxing and before pouring
concrete, and within 28 days of completion of the works.
Contact us to arrange an inspection with a minimum of 24 hours
notice.
