Local event funding

Introduction | Eligibility criteria | How to apply

Introduction

At the Combined Committees meeting in June 2004, budget provision was made to allocate $11,000 per community board area for free event funding, specific to those community board areas. In addition, local events previously funded and/or organised by Auckland City Council will now become eligible for consideration for community board event funding instead.

The intention of this fund is to ensure free community driven events are resourced, and to allow greater flexibility of provision of local events utilising local knowledge. It is anticipated that Auckland City Council will guide these events through the funding process.

Requests for this fund can be considered at any time during the year. You should apply using the local event funding application form.

Eligibility criteria

Funding applications must comply with the following criteria:

  • the funding must be used for running an actual event
  • the event must be free (have no cover charge in any form)
  • the event must be held in a public place (eg park, beach, etc)
  • the event must be open to anyone who wishes to attend and not restricted to particular sectors of the community
  • the event must not be solely for commercial gain or fundraising purposes (eg must have a significant 'free event' component)
  • applications for event funding must not be retrospective at the point of decision making (eg the event has already been held and funding would be a reimbursement)
  • the event must be local in nature and can receive funding from no more than two community boards
  • the event must display Auckland City Council-branded banners and logos and acknowledgements on written material. Contact us for more information
  • the event can be sponsored (if so it should reflect Auckland City Council's sponsorship policy).

Events funded should also reflect the Auckland City Council events strategy which seeks to ensure a wide range of quality events that:

  • enhance Auckland as an exciting place to work, live, visit and enjoy the arts and recreation
  • reflect Auckland's diverse people and cultures
  • create a unique identity for Auckland and enable its expression
  • give Auckland city residents and ratepayers a sense of pride and ownership of those events (return on ratepayer investment)
  • support the use of investment infrastructure (eg Viaduct Basin, Auckland Domain)
  • allow the city's values, beliefs and principles to be expressed (eg protests, celebration, charity events, commemorative events).
