Proposal to schedule buildings in the CBD
Proposal to schedule buildings in the CBD
Auckland City Council has assessed seven buildings in the central area and all available
information concerning them against the heritage assessment criteria in the
central area plan.
Proposed plan modification 7 is a plan change that seeks to include the
following buildings in the schedule of heritage buildings:
- 13 Albert Street, Auckland - Yates Building
- 10 Eden Crescent, Auckland - Hotel Cargen (Trans Tasman Building 2005)
- 140 Hobson Street, Auckland - Prince of Wales Hotel/Tavern (City Mission
2005)
- 164-168 Hobson Street, Auckland (corner Cook Street) - Wong Doo Building
(Canvas 2005)
- 44-48 Queen Street, Auckland - Imperial Building
- 26 Wyndham Street, Auckland - former Gas Co Building (Dick Smith
Electronics 2005)
- 16 Waterloo Quadrant, Auckland - Nathan House (Newman Hall 2005).
All of the buildings, except 16 Waterloo Quadrant, meet the
criteria for Category B Scheduled Items. The building at 16 Waterloo Quadrant (Newman Hall) is considered to meet the
criteria for a Category A Scheduled Items. All buildings are considered to have
sufficient heritage value to warrant protection as scheduled items in the
central area plan.
Details of the plan change
Details of the plan change and background information are available
on this site.
The proposed plan change seeks to schedule these buildings to
ensure that their heritage values are protected from inappropriate use and
development and to ensure the integrity of Auckland City's heritage resources
are maintained.
The benefits of scheduling these buildings are quite clear. The central area
plan would provide protection of these buildings on an ongoing basis. Further,
the plan change process will involve public notification, which will allow
members of the public to become involved in the process.
The closing date for submissions
was Friday 22 July 2005.
In terms of risk, the buildings have been identified as having significant
heritage worth and features, and if the buildings were not scheduled then this
may result in the loss of a significant part of the city's heritage. Overall,
scheduling of the buildings is the most effective and efficient way of ensuring
the continuing protection of the city's built heritage.
