Changes to swimming pool entry fees

What's changing

Changes to some Auckland city swimming pool entry prices will take effect from Labour Weekend (25 October 2008). Escalating operating costs last year forced Auckland City Council to approve the first rise in swimming pool entry prices in 10 years. At this time it was agreed that price increases at the pools would be linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and would be adjusted annually in 20c increments if movement in the CPI is this large.

A casual adult entry price at the following pools will rise from $5 to $5.20, while the child entry price will remain at $2.50:

A casual adult entry price at the Parnell Baths and Tepid Baths will rise from $5.50 to $5.70, while the child entry price will rise from $3.50 to $3.70.

Four other pools are not affected by the entry price increase due to their contractual arrangements. These are:

Auckland City Council subsidises the running of 12 pools and reviews the financial subsidy regularly. This year, the council has contributed $1.4m in subsidies to swimming pools.

Discount framework

Discount framework

A discount framework will continue to offer reduced entry costs to infants, seniors, students, community service card holders, non-swimmers, families and frequent users of the facilities.

Fee category Description Formula Entry fee
Adult 16 to 65 years Adult price $5.20
Child 5 to 15 years Child price $2.50
Infant Infant under 5 years with in-water adult over 16 years Child plus non-swimmer $3.50
Student Secondary or tertiary student over16 with identification 20 per cent discount on adult price $4.20
Senior 65 years plus with suitable identification 20 per cent discount on adult price $4.20
Community card On presentation of a valid Community Service Card 20 per cent discount on adult price $4.20
Non-swimmer Non-swimming attendee 80 per cent discount on adult price $1.00
Family One or more adults with two or more children 10 per cent discount on each adult and child price $9.20 (based on one adult and two children)
High-user 10+ visit concession card 10 per cent discount $47.20

For each user group there is a percentage formula. In the future, as CPI adjustments change the casual entry price, the discounts will be recalculated based on the formulas. Discount prices will be rounded using the Swedish rounding system (1,2,3,4,5 to 0 and 6,7,8,9 to 10cents).

The discount framework will apply as follows:

  • children under five years old
Children under the age of five years can only enter the swimming pool with an adult over 16 years who is going to swim with those children. The infant rate covers one child under five years and one adult over 16 years. The discount formula is based on one child and one non-swimmer.
  • senior and students
People over 65 years with appropriate identification of their age. Students over 16 years with appropriate identification of their status as secondary school or tertiary students.
  • Community Service Card holders
Holders of a valid Community Service Card holder are eligible for 20 per cent discount on adult holding the card and 20 per cent discount on children entering in the supervision of the adult.
  • non-swimmers
Any participant who enters the facility and does not swim. The rationale for this charge is that all users contribute to the cost of operating the swimming pool and will consume some services or products.
  • family
Where one of more adults enter with one or more children, each person will be eligible for 10% discount of the respective adult or child rate. Example:
    • one adult with two children = 1 x $5.00 + 2 x $2.50 = $10.00, less 10 per cent discount = $9.00
  • high-users
Users can buy a high user concession card for a minimum of 10 swims, where they are eligible for 10 per cent discount. This effectively equates to buy 9 swims and receive 1 swim for free.

Supervision policy for young children at public swimming pools

Children under eight years must be actively supervised by a caregiver 16 years or over. Actively supervised means you must be watching the child at all times and be able to provide immediate assistance. Immediate assistance means within arms reach.
