Wheelie bins - Auckland isthmus
Only rated properties on the Auckland isthmus receive red-lidded wheelie bins. Properties in the inner Central Business District and the Gulf Islands have
alternative rubbish collection arrangements.
Household rubbish
Note: the weekly kerbside rubbish collection is for residential properties only.
Each rateable property is entitled to a red-lidded wheelie bin for the disposal of household rubbish and which is emptied once a week.

Wheelie bins are:
- easy to handle - can be wheeled even when full
- hygienic - they are waterproof and keep out cats, dogs and vermin
- reusable
- maintained and replaced free of charge if damaged or stolen.
So that your wheelie bin is collected each week, be sure to:
- only place household rubbish in your bin.
- place your bin on the kerbside by 7am if you have a daytime service or 5pm if you normally have a night time service.
- place your bin so that it is within one meter of the kerb and away from any obstructions
- do not over fill your bin - make sure that the lid can be closed
- place your bin where the truck can easily access it.
Bins belong to properties - please, when you move house, don't take your wheelie or recycling bin/s with you. Auckland City
Council can organise these bins for your
new home if you need them.
What is household rubbish?
Wheelie bins are intended for the disposal of 'household rubbish' - this is domestic waste which cannot be recycled or composted, and is non hazardous.
What things should not go into your wheelie bin?
- recyclables
- garden waste - eg grass clippings etc
- building waste - eg timber, concrete, bricks
- hazardous waste - petrol, paints, solvents
- excessively heavy material - furniture, wood, rocks, etc
- hot ashes
- waste arising from business activity
- soil, clay or rocks.
How to sort your rubbish
Compost garden waste. Please don’t put this in your wheelie bin. Food scraps can also be composted at home using a compost or worm bin, or
put in your wheelie bin.
Get information about composting, garden bag collections and transfer stations
for garden material. |
| Inorganic material - tyres, whiteware eg fridges, furniture, electrical appliances A lot of this material can be reused or recycled. Currently
Auckland City Council provides a city-wide inorganic collection once every two years. Watch for notices in your letter box and
City Scene. |
| Household hazardous waste - such as paint, waste oil, pesticides, household chemicals and batteries should be disposed of at a HazMobile
collection day. For a schedule of the collection days please check out the HazMobile website or call the
Auckland Regional Council Enviroline. |
| Recycling material - eg. glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, aluminium/tin cans, paper, magazines and cardboard.

Council's recycling service. |
Problems with your bin service
If you put your wheelie bin out on the right day, (allowing for public holidays) but it was not emptied, it may be for one of the following reasons:
- your bin was not put out by 7am
- your bin was too full to close the lid completely
- there was rubbish was protruding from your bin
- your bin contained heavy items eg concrete
- your bin contained organic material eg grass clippings
- your bin contained inorganic material eg paint, broken glass
- your bin was too close to a car, tree or other obstruction.
If your bin was not collected for one of these reasons, you will need to rectify the problem, for example removing any material such as concrete. You will
have to wait and put your bin out again for the next week's collection.
If there is another reason your bin was not emptied, contact us for assistance.
Bin damaged

Request new bin for a new property

an additional charge or the pro-rata amount if you have already been

you if this charge applies to you.
Bin stolen
If your red-lidded wheelie bin has been stolen, you can request a replacement as follows:
