Recycling in
public spaces trial
On 20 May 2009 Auckland City Council initiated a twelve-month recycling trial
in the central business district (CBD). Bins were installed at 22 sites
throughout the city, mostly at transport gateways such as the Auckland Ferry
Terminal, the Viaduct and Britomart.
The trial is in support of the Ministry for the Environment's national
campaign - Love New Zealand - to encourage recycling in public places. The
council is currently considering extending the public place recycling trial to
other areas around the city.
The bins are presently emptied twice daily by council contractors and the
recyclables collected are brought to the Materials Recovery Facility in Onehunga
for processing.
