Street lighting

Auckland City provides and maintains street lighting on public streets and in suburban open air carparks.

You can contact us with any enquiry regarding street lighting, including the following issues:

  • Lights not working.
  • Lights left on during the day.
  • Lights left off at night or with incorrect timings.
  • Damaged lights - particularly if it is causing a safety hazard.
  • Electric pole with street light knocked over.
  • Nuisance caused by positioning of light.
  • Lights being obscured by trees.
  • Dim or outdated lighting.
  • A need for stronger or additional lights.

To ensure the issue is resolved quickly, please provide us with as much of the following information as you can:

  1. The exact location of the street light - ie the house number and street name that the streetlight is outside / opposite, any identifying feature or landmark.
  2. A description of the problem - eg not sufficient light, light is not working, the pole is down.
  3. For light nuisance, the number of the house that is affected, the side of the road the light is on and which room of the house the light is affecting eg upstairs.

Moving or removing street lights

No street light can be removed completely. If a light is to be moved, it can only be moved a maximum of 1 metre. In some cases the street light cannot be moved at all. The cost to move the street light must be borne by the person requesting the move.
