Auckland City Council Register of Second Hand Dealers Database
1929-1936

Originally, secondhand dealers were required to be licensed under the Secondhand Dealers Act 1908. The act required anyone dealing in secondhand goods to hold a license and this had to be applied for through the local authority (council) of the district in which the shop was located (Section 4). Section 5 required the clerk of the local authority to keep an alphabetical record of the licenses issued.

This register was kept by Auckland City Council and records the details of secondhand dealers under the following headings: license number, licensee name, address, date the license was issued on and the expiry date.

Since 2004, the registration of dealers and the maintenance of a public register of secondhand dealers and pawnbrokers have been managed by the Licensing Authority of Secondhand Dealers and Pawnbrokers, which is an independent judicial body. It was established under the Secondhand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 2004. This act repealed and replaced the Pawnbrokers Act 1908 and Secondhand Dealers Act 1963.

The database is searchable by name and address. Use the Browse button to browse the contents of these fields.
