The possible future Baku of New Zealand: A general view of the oildfield at Moturua, New Plymouth, Taranaki. Indications of the presence of oil are not wantimg at the Moturua at the present time. Boring operations at No. 3 bore have had to be suspended on several occasions lately owing to big blow-outs, one of which shot a column of pure oil high above the derrick. The bores in each case are being sunk steadily and it is confidently expected in many quarters that a permanent flow will be struck shortly.

Boring for old in the Wairarapa District, Wellington, the wells at Mangaone. Work at the Mangaone oil wells is proceeding apace. The bore is now down between 900ft and 1000ft. The percussion drill is being used, the rotary having been placed temporarily out of repair. Gas has been emitted at several stages of the operations, and the borers are still sanguine of success.
