Portrait of Major Robert Davies Hardie of Palmerston North, Service number 10/1171 who was the Second-in-Command of the New Zealand Machine Gun Battalion from 26 March 1917. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his courage at the Battle of Messines in June 1917, when although wounded in the eye, he continued to lead his men during heavy fighting.
