Bio Note: Elisabeth Hellawell began her singing studies under Dame Sister Mary Leo at the St Marys School of Music and was a fellow student with such singers as Kiri Te Kanawa, Hanah Tatana, Heather Begg, Malvina Major and Mary O’Brien. She was successful in competitions and went to London to study at the National Opera School. She then studied in Munich and was placed 2nd in the Concours Internationale du chant competition in Toulouse in 1958.
In 1971, when the NZ Opera Company was discontinued, she changed career and trained as a school teacher. However, she still continued to perform until 1980.Returning to New Zealand in 1961, she became instrumental in the rise of the NZ Opera Company, performing as soloist in many operas and concerts all over New Zealand. She regularly performed with the NZBC Symphony Orchestra in the Proms Concert seasons under many renowned conductors and with many other guest soloists. As well as performing in Australia, she was regularly broadcast on radio and on television.

Abstract

The Elisabeth Hellawell papers contain a wealth of information, ephemera and memorabilia collected over her years as a professional singer both in New Zealand and overseas. This donation contains programmes of concerts, reviews and articles, letters and official invitations, photographs, posters and scrapbooks

Inventory

NZMS 1694 Elisabeth Hellawell, soprano Biographical profile Elisabeth Hellawell began her singing studies under Dame Sister Mary Leo at the St Marys School of Music and was a fellow student with such singers as Kiri Te Kanawa, Hanah Tatana, Heather Begg, Malvina Major and Mary O’Brien.
