Bio Note: Auckland Province and Auckland Provincial Council The New Zealand Constitution Act of 1852 set up six provinces to govern the local areas – Auckland, New Plymouth (later Taranaki), Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury and Otago. Each had a ruling body consisting of a Superintendent and Council elected by the people of the province. Auckland Province was officially formed on 17 January 1853, from the Province of New Ulster, and over its life there were 7 councils, 30 sessions and 192 council members which were presided over by nine Superintendents and three Speakers. Auckland was the largest province, both in area and population. It covered over half of the North Island, and in 1853 contained 35% of the European and 70% of the Maori populations in New Zealand. It was bounded by the coastline to the east, north, and west, and to the south by the 39th parallel as far as the River Tahua (Ohura), and then by a straight line drawn to the source of the Mokau River and by that river to its mouth. While Auckland Province remained the same there were changes to many of the other provinces – Hawke's Bay province split from Wellington (1 November 1858), New Plymouth province was renamed Taranaki (1 January 1859), Marlborough province split from Nelson (1 November 1859), Southland province split from Otago (1 April 1861), Stewart Island was annexed into the Southland province (1863), the capital of New Zealand was moved from Auckland to Wellington (1865), Southland province was merged back into Otago (6 October 1870) and Westland province split from Canterbury (1 December 1873). In 1875 the New Zealand Parliament made the decision to abolish the Provincial Governments in favour of central government. Auckland Province was officially dissolved on 1 November 1876 with its functions being taken up by local counties and boroughs, or resumed by the central Government.

Abstract

Records of the Auckland Provincial Council which officially cover the period 1853 to 1876, however there is some material that pre-dates this, mostly from the Provinces of New Munster and New Ulster.

Contents arranged by council session with sundry and miscellaneous material at end. See Inventory for detailed listing.

This collection is split into two sequences. The first sequence (boxes 1-30) consist of an initial donation that was arranged and described in the 1980s, and the second sequence (boxes 31-66) consists of a later addition of material arranged and described in the 2010s. Both sequences are initially arranged by council session, however sequence 1 is then arranged by subject in alphabetical order, whereas sequence 2 is arranged chronologically as there was no particular original order when donated.

INVENTORY NZMS 595 (previously inventory 9)

This inventory is split into two sequences. The first sequence (boxes 1-30) consist of an initial donation that was arranged and described in the 1970s, and the second sequence (boxes 31-66) consist of an later addition of material arranged and described in the 2010s. Both sequences are initially arranged by council session, however sequence one is then arranged by subject in alphabetical order, whereas sequence two is arranged chronologically as there was no particular order to this part of the collection when donated. Further A&D work is required to list and add subject terms to sequence 2. The majority of material in this collection needs conservation work - mostly flattening. Some items in sequence two are rolled and will need flattening before A&D work can be done.
