The mail must get throughFrom City Scene, published on 19 August, 2007
Auckland City Council spent $30 million upgrading footpaths in poor condition in the 2006/2007 financial year. In 2001, public consultation showed 85 per cent of people thought good quality footpaths were important, and identified visual appearance, cost, safety, accessibility and durability as the most important attributes. The upgrade programme focuses on footpaths found to be in poor condition during a survey of the council's 2214km footpath network. During footpath upgrades, the council works hard to ensure life carries on as smoothly as possible for residents, businesses, pedestrians, motorists and other service providers. Mail deliveries are one of the important services that need to be maintained and the council and its contractors work closely with New Zealand Post to ensure mail delivery remains as unaffected as possible. Contractors such as Phil Rawlinson (above, right), assist posties like Nicholas Blanchard (above, left), to ensure they are able to move safely around digging equipment and newly surfaced areas. Occasionally, safety concerns mean mail delivery is temporarily disrupted. When this happens, residents can call New Zealand Post on 0800 501 501 to arrange to pick-up their mail.
