Wetland wins awardFrom City Scene, published on 26 August, 2007
Auckland City Council's work on the Waiatarua Wetland restoration project was acknowledged in the Sustainable Public Sector category at the recent ARC Sustainable Environment Awards. The reserve is the site of the country's largest urban wetland project, with enhancements including reduced flooding and improvements to stormwater quality, ecological benefits and the creation of a popular reserve. The awards celebrate individuals, groups, schools and businesses working towards a sustainable Auckland. Churchill Park School - who had been assisted with their zero waste project by the council's waste education officer, Lindsey du Preez - received a Youth Category award. WasteWise schools programme facilitator for the council, Nicki Elmore, was awarded joint winner of the Environmental Education category for her work with Meadowbank School on sustainability education. The council is committed to supporting projects that help deliver the best possible environmental, economic, social and cultural outcomes for everyone.
