Auckland City Council is working with 170 schools in our city to minimise the waste they produce. Current initiatives include:

  • introducing free kerbside recyclables collection for schools
  • promoting composting through the Fruit in Schools programme
  • expanding the WasteWise schools programme (originally a pilot programme coordinated by the Auckland Regional Council)
  • supporting the Enviroschools programme to encourage waste reduction and sustainable use of our resources
  • providing tours through the transfer station (close to 2000 students visited the transfer station and learning centre last year).

Works and Services Committee chairperson, Councillor Neil Abel, says the council is committed to encouraging responsible waste practices among our city's young people. "We're working with schools and students to find creative ways to meet waste management goals," he says. "Not only are students learning new ways to reduce waste and manage their impact on the environment but, hopefully, their actions will motivate friends and families to do the same."
