Protecting our parksFrom City Scene, published on 26 August, 2007
Electric utility vehicles introduced last year at Western Springs Park are just one example of the council integrating environmentally sustainable initiatives in the daily running of our parks. The quiet, battery-powered, gas-free vehicles minimise damage to paths and lawns and produce no emission. Parks Services manager, Mark Bowater, says his team is constantly seeking ways to improve park facilities and protect natural heritage. "Each year we undertake numerous park improvement projects, such as upgrading sports fields, landscaping and tree planting, constructing new walkways, and improving toilet facilities. We also have an increasing focus on protecting our volcanic landscapes, to ensure they are preserved for future generations. It's all part of a drive to protect our city's unique open spaces for everyone to enjoy."
