Auckland's living legendsFrom City Scene, published on 2 September, 2007
Two Aucklanders were awarded Living Legends awards last week. Mayor Dick Hubbard presented the awards to business leader Sir Ron Carter (top) and musician Mike Chunn (bottom), to acknowledge their outstanding contribution to our city. Mr Hubbard says Sir Ron is one of Auckland's treasures. "Not only has he been an outstanding businessman, he continues to roll his sleeves up through his role at Committee for Auckland, a not-for-profit organisation involved in many of the city's major projects. His drive, passion and his commitment to make a contribution is admirable." Musician Mike Chunn, of Split Enz fame, has made a huge contribution to the local music industry during the past 25 years. Mr Hubbard says most recently, Mr Chunn has been responsible for setting up Play it Strange, a charitable trust that nurtures the musical and writing talent of secondary school students. "This is a highly successful school programme that encourages our young people to celebrate life through music," says Mr Hubbard. "Mr Chunn is a legendary Aucklander and I'm delighted to honour him."
