Plan change protects streetscape character

From City Scene, published on 2 September, 2007

Auckland City Council's latest district plan change will help protect our city's character buildings. The plan change will require resource consent to demolish pre-1940s buildings in Queen Street valley and Karangahape Road precincts, and character buildings beyond these areas that are identified as contributing to the local streetscape. "These plan changes are about buildings that might not make the grade for their heritage value," says the chairperson of the hearings panel, Councillor Glenda Fryer, "but in their own right or as a group contribute to streetscape character and sense of place to the central city area." The new rules take into account that part of the character of the city had the potential to be lost under existing rules.
