Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki's restoration and expansion is set to go ahead after its resource consent was upheld in an interim decision in the Environment Court this week. Earlier this year, the court heard three appeals against the gallery's resource consent, and the redesignation of Albert Park from historic reserve to local purpose art gallery to allow for its expansion. Judge Newhook said it was the court's view that the council's design of the gallery extension integrated well with Albert Park. In its interim decision, the court dismissed issues raised by the appellants. However, the court also said the council needed to re-examine a component of the roof design as it relates to the 1887 D'Ebro and Grainger building on the corner of Wellesley and Kitchener streets. The council will make the required alteration to the roofline design and seek the court's approval within the 90-day period specified by Judge Newhook.
