Recycling computers

From City Scene, published on 16 September, 2007

Your old computers and mobile phones are toxic to the environment but the council can help you get rid of them safely.

On Sunday, 30 September you can drop off your hazardous electronic waste to the TelstraPacific Events Centre, 770 Great South Road, Manukau City and at the North Shore Events Centre, Silverfield Road entrance (off Porana Road), Glenfield.

The collections are part of the Auckland City Council-sponsored pilot programme E-Day 2007. The council is currently working to secure a suitable Auckland city location for collections next year.

The initiative aims to:

  • increase public awareness of the hazardous nature of electronic equipment and that its disposal in landfills is not a sustainable option
  • provide collection points where residents can drop off their old computers and computer equipment only (other electronic goods such as TV's and stereos will not be accepted).

Schools will be able to dispose of their computer waste and old mobile phones between 24 and 28 September at RCN and Associates (phone 09 413 8533) or The Ark Computers (phone 09 272 2676). Please call in advance to let them know how much waste you are bringing.
