Getting on with upgrading Tiverton RoadFrom City Scene, published on 16 September, 2007
Auckland City Council has completed the first stage of its $17 million upgrade of Tiverton Road in Blockhouse Bay. The section between Blockhouse Bay Road and Whitney Street, previously two lanes wide, has been widened. Other improvements include a new road surface that is smoother and quieter to travel on, extensive planting, two new bus shelters and a more attractive street environment. Lane markings will be completed during stage two when traffic lights are installed at intersections (Blockhouse Bay Road and Whitney Street) on Tiverton Road. Transport and Urban Linkages Committee chairperson, Councillor Richard Simpson, says the completion of this first section marks an important milestone in the council's work upgrading local roads to support motorway extensions. "Tiverton Road and Wolverton Street form a key route between Auckland and Waitakere cities," says Mr Simpson, "and it's vital this important route is completed in time to support Transit's State Highway 20 Mt Roskill extension. The project has progressed well both in terms of the budget and timeframe, which bodes very well for stage two." Stage one was completed under budget, with savings set to benefit the next stage. Plans for stage two are well under way, with the project team seeking resource consents and completing the final design. Work on the next stage is due to start in mid-2008.
