Better recreation centres for our city

From City Scene, published on 23 September, 2007

The Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee has approved a 10-year plan to guide the development of recreation centres in our city. The plan was created in consultation with the community, regional sport organisations and leisure facility operators to get Aucklanders more active, more often. Some of the plan's actions include:

  • investigating the need for a recreation centre in the Mt Eden and Mt Roskill area
  • redeveloping the Lynfield Recreation Centre and improving community use of the Avondale College Stadium
  • reviewing recreation centre opening hours
  • alleviating peak-time pressures and demand on existing recreation centres
  • providing activities for young people to be active, to help build their self-esteem and connect them with the community
  • increasing awareness of the range of recreation centre opportunities available.

Committee chairperson, Councillor Penny Sefuiva, says the plan identifies both gaps in services provided by the city's recreation centres, and centres that need improving. "It provides clear direction on how to address these issues and ensures future generations will have the facilities they need to lead active, healthy lifestyles."
