Keeping Auckland's future brightFrom City Scene, published on 30 September, 2007
Sustainability in our cityIt's easier than ever to cycle into the CBD: Auckland City Council has installed cycle racks in the Downtown car park. The dedicated cycle area provides an easily accessible and dry location for cyclists to store their bikes during the day at no charge. The racks are located near the Customs Street exit and monitored by closed circut television. Providing them is another way of improving travel choices for Aucklanders and supporting people who cycle into the CBD. It also allows the council to make more efficient use of the car park building. Passing on skills: Grandparent Faasala Tauinoala teaches the kids from Owairaka Primary School a recipe from Samoa. The cooking lesson was part of an Auckland City Council initiative to connect grandparents with the younger generation. Each class had a cooking lesson with a grandparent who shared recipes from their respective ethnic heritage. The purpose is to help bridge the generation gap and explore different cultures in Mt Albert. The project is in line with the council's Positive Ageing in Auckland plan, which promotes opportunities for interaction between generations. It also supports the council's aim to create a city that values cultural diversity and promotes mutual learning through activities between cultures.
