Recycling boost

From City Scene, published on 7 October, 2007

Recycling in our city will get a major boost in mid-2008 when new 240-litre wheelie bins for recyclable materials are introduced.

The council will inform residents about the timetable for changes to the service and bin delivery closer to the time. In the meantime, the current weekly recycling system will continue. This means using the existing blue crates for glass bottles, plastic containers and steel cans, and placing paper and cardboard out separately for kerbside collection.

The benefits of the new wheelie bin recycling system include:

  • greater capacity - recycling more reduces waste sent to landfill
  • simpler sorting - no need to separate paper and cardboard from other recyclables
  • cleaner and greener - fortnightly collections will reduce fuel costs and vehicle emissions, and sturdy bin lids will reduce wind-blown litter
  • safer system - the bin will be easier to use and a mechanical pick-up system will improve safety for collection crews
  • economies of scale - the service is a joint venture of Manukau and Auckland city councils.
