Auckland City Council signed a memorandum of understanding this month to forge closer relationships with Pacific Island communities in our city.

The key objectives of the memorandum, signed by the council and the Pacific Island Board Auckland City, are to:

  • establish close links and communication between Pacific Island communities and the council
  • promote Auckland as a city with a distinct Pacific heritage
  • support relationships between tangata whenua and tangata pasifika
  • promote sustainability practices to enhance the social, economic and cultural heritage of Pacific Island peoples.

Pacific Island communities make-up 14 per cent of Auckland's population and the council wants to ensure there are opportunities for these communities to participate more fully in the decision-making processes that shape our city's future. The chairperson of the Pacific Island Board Auckland City, Asenati Lole Taylor, says the board is pleased with the clear direction the memorandum sets for the future.
