Council approves streamlined committee structure

From City Scene, published on 11 November, 2007

Auckland city's councillors have decided on a streamlined committee structure that focuses on areas of significant council activity. The structure is:

  • major committees: Arts, Culture and Recreation; City Development; Transport and Infrastructure; Finance and Strategy; and Community Services
  • small committees: Audit and Risk; Performance Monitoring; and Regional Governance
  • enterprise boards for Auckland Zoo and the Auckland Art Gallery.

This is a change from the previous council (which had 12 major and three minor, committees, two enterprise boards and several sub-committees and working parties).

Deputy Mayor David Hay says the new council structure will ensure clear accountability and delegation, allow councillors more time to act as advocates for constituents and focus on high-level governance, and delivers on promises to reduce council spending.

How to have your say in decision-making

Aucklanders can be involved in the council's decision-making processes in various ways. Auckland City Council consults with the public, holds open days and welcomes submissions on major projects and upgrades around the city. You can also provide your views on citywide and local issues by contacting your local councillor or community board member.

Another way that you can be involved in decision-making is by joining Listening Post - a community panel that helps the council better understand the interests and needs of residents and visitors. Listening Post members receive regular emails about, and provide input on, important matters affecting our city and its people. To find out more about becoming a member, visit the website.
