Some tips for responsible dog ownership this summer

From City Scene, published on 13 January, 2008

Care for your canine.
Care for your canine: Regular exercise is important for your dog's wellbeing so take advantage of one of Auckland City Council's designated dog exercise areas.

Getting out and about with the dog is a great way to enjoy summer and City Scene has some useful tips to help dog owners look after their faithful friends. For more information on Auckland City Council's dog policy, which encourages responsible dog ownership, visit the website or phone 379 2020.

Made in the shade: Like humans, dogs are susceptible to sunburn, dehydration and heatstroke. Light-coloured, thin-coated dogs are vulnerable to sunburn. Always ensure your dog can find shade and has water available, even when you are travelling.

Having a heatwave: When your dog is travelling with you, make sure your car is well ventilated. If you have to leave your dog in the car, keep an eye on the time, park in the shade and leave the windows slightly down.

Excellent exercise: Regular exercise is important for your dog's well-being. Auckland city has 128 designated dog exercise areas. Your dog does not have to be on a leash when you are with it in a dog exercise area, but you must carry a leash and keep your dog under control. Dogs classified as menacing or dangerous must be muzzled and on a leash when in any public area, including dog exercise areas.

Dog-free zones: Dogs are not permitted in any park or reserve where a public gathering is taking place; within 10m of a children's playground; in some public places such as forests and reserves; in a place publicly notified by the council; and on any licensed premises where food is prepared or sold.

Doggie don'ts: All droppings done by your dog in a public place or on land or premises other than your own must be removed immediately and disposed of in a way that doesn't cause a nuisance. When you are out with your dog, carry several bags and dispose of the waste in a designated bin at a dog exercise area, in a public rubbish bin or in your own bin at home. Dog droppings can contain harmful germs and parasites that may contaminate stormwater, streams and beaches. Failing to clean up after your dog is an offence carrying a $300 fine.

Think you've got it covered? Apply for an Auckland City Council dog-owner licence. Not only will it increase your awareness about being a responsible dog owner, it entitles you to a lower registration fee and, best of all, it's free. Call animal control on 360 0750 to book a dog-owner licence session.
