David Schwarz from Germany and Susie Ford from England remove weeds from pasture areas on Maungawhau-Mt Eden. Their efforts add to the work done by local volunteers to support the council's work managing the mountain. The pair represent a new breed of international tourists who work voluntarily on conservation projects promoted by organisations such as Conservation Volunteers New Zealand. David Bowden, the council's parks volunteer coordinator, says conservation tourism is good for the local economy and environment. "The collective effort volunteers put in across the city shouldn't be underestimated," he says. "Many projects depend on volunteers, including the Oakley Creek revegetation project, the Waikowhai Wildlife Sanctuary and the McKenzie Reserve Botanic Garden." If you're interested in volunteering, visit the park volunteer activity page or phone 379 2020.
