Disposing of hazardous wasteFrom City Scene, published on 10 February, 2008 Auckland City Council reminds residents to avoid throwing hazardous materials in their red-lidded rubbish bins and instead take them to the HazMobile, a mobile service that safely disposes of hazardous waste including oil, household chemicals and brake fluid. Putting oil out with regular rubbish can cause explosions and creates a slippery, flammable and hazardous mess for the city's rubbish collectors. Disposing of gas cylinders with household waste is also dangerous as they are highly combustible and can jam the collection truck's compactor units. The HazMobile no longer accepts paint. You can drop off leftover paint and paint tins at selected Resene outlets or participating PlaceMakers stores. This website has lots of tips and ideas on how to dispose of your rubbish thoughtfully, as well as details of the HazMobile collection days. The next HazMobile collections are in Western Springs on Saturday, 12 April and Glen Innes on Saturday, 7 June.
