FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, has confirmed Auckland as host for the finals of this year's FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup - an event broadcast to more than 150 countries. Auckland and North Shore city councils' joint bid to host the finals of the 16-team tournament was confirmed last month. In addition to holding the finals on 16 November, the Auckland region will host the opening ceremony and match on 28 October and three double-header pool games, all at North Harbour Stadium. The FIFA headquarters for the event will be located in central Auckland.

The Mayor of Auckland city, Hon. John Banks, says the confirmation of the finals is another step in establishing the region as a desirable major events destination. "Auckland is definitely the right place for an event of this magnitude," says Mr Banks. "The joint bid's success also shows that we can work together across the region and to attract and host major events." Auckland City Council is working with FIFA to develop a programme of football-related activities for residents and school children in support of the event.
