Improving public transport

From City Scene, published on 3 March, 2008

Bus lanes are to be introduced on parts of Remuera and St Johns roads to improve the reliability of public transport during peak traffic hours.

The council's Transport Committee chairperson, Councillor Ken Baguley, says the bus lanes will result in a quicker, more reliable bus service.

"Remuera and St Johns roads form a key route connecting the eastern suburbs with Newmarket and the CBD," says Mr Baguley. "The bus lanes will allow buses to keep more closely to published timetables and reduce journey times along the route."

Design of the bus lanes has been revised following consultation, and was endorsed by the committee in March.

Construction of the 4.5km of new bus lanes is due to start in April and will take several months to complete. The project is part of the council's ongoing commitment to providing convenient and attractive travel choices for Aucklanders, and will add to the city's existing 27km bus lane network.
