Queen Street upgrade running ahead of scheduleFrom City Scene, published on 30 March, 2008
The latest section of the council's Queen Street upgrade, between Victoria and Customs streets, has been completed ahead of schedule. Work included widening and paving footpaths and constructing new light-controlled pedestrian crossings near Durham and Fort streets to improve pedestrian safety. Nikau palms were also planted and multifunctional street poles, new street furniture and public art have been installed. Two parts of the $43m upgrade are still under way. The upgrade between Mayoral Drive and Karangahape Road, which also has a pedestrian safety focus, is advanced, as is progress in the open space on the corner of Wakefield and Queen streets.
