Helping out our waterways

From City Scene, published on 30 March, 2008

Would you like to play a part in keeping Auckland's waterways free from rubbish and make our environment healthier and safer? You can volunteer to take part in the council's annual creeks and coasts clean-up programme to clear waterways of rubbish that can also choke or trap birds and harm aquatic life. "The variety of litter dumped in our waterways is astounding and concerning," says park volunteer coordinator David Bowden. "Getting involved in the clean-ups is a great way to take direct action to improve your community and environment," says Mr Bowden.

To take part, volunteers simply need to turn up on the day, wearing sturdy shoes, sunscreen and gloves.

The next two clean-up dates and times are:

  • Gribblehirst Park, Sandringham, Sunday, 6 April at 9.30am. Meet in the carpark by the football clubrooms, Cabbage Tree Swamp Drive
  • Tony Segedin Reserve, Avondale, Sunday, 13 April at 9.30am. Meet at the end of Riversdale Road, off Rosebank Road.
