Images by pioneering New Zealand photographer Henry Winkelmann are available for everyone to enjoy at the Central City Library, Auckland Museum and in the New Zealand National Maritime Museum's exhibition, Winkelmann's Waitemata - Sea, Sky and Sail.

Winkelmann's body of work provides our most comprehensive visual record of early 20th century Auckland, documenting events, family and suburban life, and our rich maritime history.

As a keen sailor, Winkelmann photographed many vessels and harbour events. More than 50 of his finest works are on display in the New Zealand National Maritime Museum's current exhibition, Winkelmann's Waitemata - Sea, Sky and Sail.

The Central City Library's Special Collections also holds more than 1800 Winkelmann images, including glass plate negatives purchased in 1928 that show the central city and suburbs. The collection is a treasure trove for people studying Auckland's history and is popular with homeowners keen to source early photographs of their houses.

Winkelmann left his remaining collection of photographs and glass plate negatives to Auckland Museum after his death in 1931. The collection includes negatives of his photographs of other parts of New Zealand and the Pacific islands. The museum collection is viewable online and via photographic prints made from the original glass plate negatives.
