Creating better beaches and reserves

More sand: Next summer Pt Chevalier residents can look forward to more sand on their beach - one of the six western beaches the council is improving during the next few months.

The council is resanding six of the city's western beaches and upgrading four coastal reserves in time for next summer.

Work to replenish sand at Pt Chevalier Beach is planned between September and December, with additional replenishments of Hamilton, Sentinel, Herne Bay, Taylors Bay and Blockhouse Bay beaches scheduled between June and August. Surrounding reserves - Marine Parade, Bella Vista, Cremorne and Home Bay Beach Reserve - will have other features upgraded during the next few months.

"After successful upgrades at Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St Heliers beaches, it's great to be able to give people in the west of the city new beaches for summer," says Mayor of Auckland city, Hon. John Banks. "People around these western bays will have improvements to look forward to," Mr Banks says, "not just with more sand on their local beaches, but also more space to enjoy, and the addition of new stairs, planting and street furniture in the reserves surrounding them. I know these enhancements will be welcomed and well-used."

The work will take place during daytime hours and, for public safety reasons, access to the affected beaches and reserves will be restricted during construction.
