Coastal track opens up Waiheke Island
From City Scene, published on 24 August, 2008 A 2.5km track through prime Waiheke coastline opens this week, freeing up what was previously inaccessible coastline to recreational walkers. Park Point coastal track starts close to the Mudbrick Restaurant in Oneroa, rising sharply from the beach to cliff-top views. It traces the entire coastline of Park Point peninsula and cuts through open country and mature native bush. Walkers will be able to spot rare native birds such as dotterels and oyster catchers, see mature kowhai trees and look across to Motuihe Island. The landowner created the track as a condition of subdividing the land, and a public right-of-way ensures that access is maintained for future generations. The walk is the latest addition to the track network that the council provides on Waiheke Island. The track opens officially on Sunday, 31 August with a guided walk starting at 1.15pm. There will be a free bus to the track for people who catch the midday ferry from Auckland. To book a seat on the bus, email parks adviser Gary Wilton.
