Excavation of the 25m-deep shaft in the middle of the
Lumsden Green was completed last week. A concrete base now is in place as part
of the Lumsden Green stormwater upgrade.
This will help to resolve the flooding issues in Newmarket,
as well as separating waste and stormwater, which is good news for our beaches,
streams and harbours.
This project is an example of the
stormwater work the
council continues to implement as part of its three key priorities, which focus
on growth, water quality and flooding.
Work to remediate closed landfill sites around Auckland
city is also under way to improve water discharge quality to creeks, waterways
and harbours.
"While we are looking to hold rates at affordable levels,
the overall financial investment in water quality between our partners
Watercare,
Metrowater and the council means we are getting better harbour water
quality all the time," says Councillor Aaron Bhatnagar, chairperson of City
Development Committee.
By 2010, the harbour and eastern beaches will also benefit
from reduced wastewater overflows as the new $120 million Hobson pipeline comes
into operation following the removal of the existing above-ground pipe across
Hobson Bay.
The council will spend $230.5 million over 10 years on its
stormwater programme.
