The redevelopment of Wynyard Quarter, an area also known as
the Tank Farm, took an important step forward last week when Auckland City
Council endorsed independent recommendations for the district plan changes for
the area.
Councillor Aaron Bhatnagar, chairperson of the City
Development Committee, says there is now a clearer future for the area and that
the endorsement represents a positive step for
Sea+City, which is the
development partnership between the council and Auckland Regional Holdings.
Mr Bhatnagar says the main purpose of these district plan
changes are to re-zone an historically industrial area into a dynamic precinct
of retail, commercial and residential uses that can capitalise on the prime
location. Mr Bhatnagar says the plan changes also seek to protect the area's
unique "working waterfront" history and character by retaining a home for the
marine and fishing industries.
Access will be improved for pedestrians, cyclists and
appropriate levels of passenger transport.
"We want to see attractive new parks, plazas, boardwalks
and streets that help to establish a lively water's-edge location with events,
festivals and outdoor markets, alongside offices and apartments that will all
support the city's growth."
The plan changes were first notified in July 2007,
attracting over 600 submissions from stakeholders and the public.
The council's decision on the plan change submissions was
publicly notified on Saturday, 29 November.
