Auckland's beaches are enjoyed by thousands of people every
year. Keeping beaches safe and clean is an important job for the council.
The council has a regular programme of beach cleaning,
which includes emptying rubbish bins, cleaning toilets and changing rooms, and
picking up loose litter at least twice a day at all beaches across the isthmus.
Over the summer months, beaches at Okahu Bay, Mission Bay,
St Heliers and Kohimarama are machine-groomed on a fortnightly basis.
"Keeping our beaches clean and tidy is good for the
environment, and means people can enjoy these beautiful swimming and picnic
spots without unsightly litter," says Councillor Greg Moyle, chairperson of the
Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.
"Everyone has a part to play in keeping our beaches and
parks clean. If you're going to the beach, please make sure you place your
rubbish in one of the bins provided, or take it home with you. It is important
that we set a good example for our children and out-of-town visitors."
If any Auckland city beach is particularly dirty or a bin needs emptying,
people can phone the council.
