St Patrick's Square is transforming
Work on transforming
St Patrick's Square into an urban
oasis is nearing the halfway mark and is on track for completion by November
this year.
The development is part of the council's 10-year CBD
streetscape and open space upgrade programme. Recently an impressive new artwork
by local artist Steve Woodward was installed.
The sculpture, step touch stone, will be unveiled following
the completion of the project and will be a stunning feature in the square, set
among a terraced grass area and cascading water feature.
Local businesses are operating as usual and work on the
upgrade has been undertaken in stages to minimise disruption and ensure
pedestrian access around the square is maintained.
The council's CBD streetscape and open space upgrade
programme aims to create a distinctive urban centre that will attract a lively
mix of business, residential and cultural activity.
Energy-saving swimming pool covers
In an effort to reduce energy consumption, Panmure's Lagoon
Leisure and Fitness Centre received new coverings for its indoor swimming pools
last week.
Other Auckland City Council public swimming pool facilities
are also set to follow this year.
By decreasing the amount
of heat and water lost from pools during the night, the energy requirement of
the pool is far less. This improves energy efficiency and the environmental
impact of running recreational facilities.
Stormwater upgrade at Hillsborough Cemetery
Upgrades to the stormwater and drainage systems at
Hillsborough Cemetery have now been completed
by the council.
These improvements will help to prevent flooding and
pooling, help to control erosion and improve pedestrian access throughout the
cemetery.
